You play the player character (“the farmer”). Customize colours, outfits, ranch name,cat or dog, “favourite thing”, or roll a random preset.

Gameplay-wise gender mostly affects pronouns; hot springs changing rooms remain gender-split. Romantic relationships themselves are not locked by orientation—same-gender couples adopt children, mixed-gender couples may have biological kids. Patch 1.5+ later lets you revisit hairstyle / gender options after the right unlock.

The “favourite thing” field mainly changes Stardrop messages (author shout-outs, capital Stardew variants, …). Allowed characters for names expand over versions—see the wiki for the exact ruleset.
